MESSAGE FROM JOHN MACARTNEY
With “uncle jack” now looking for a new home, I have cleaned up this website of the many photographs. There were simply so many high res pix that it was making the site unstable. But to prove “uncle jack” really did complete this Charity Drive, we have put 20 odd photographs below of his various stages along the route.
Enjoy!
Leaving DeBary Florida at 6.0am for the START of the Drive
MONTGOMERY, Alabama
Arrival in ATLANTA, Georgia
Arrival at MOSS MOTORS, RICHMOND, Viginia
Meeting the Founder & President of the US Charity in BALTIMORE, Maryland
Meeting Executive Director of Canadian Charity in Montreal
Back to the USA and a small group from NEW ENGLAND
Somewhere in upper New York state with Jeff ‘Cosmo’ Kramer leading in his Triumph TR4A.
Line astern. “uncle jack” in the middle of a 20+ car caravan from Toronto Triumphs
INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana
TULSA, Oklahoma
AMARILLO, Texas
Pikes Peak, COLORADO @ 14,115 ft with no tangible power loss or ANY overheating!
Crossing into NEBRASKA – where twisting roads are something of a rarity!
‘The TWIN CITIES – Minnesota
Somewhere on the Trans-Canada Highway, I think?
Between Kamloops and Whistler, BRITISH COLUMBIA, Canada
(L to R) Genevieve Charette (Canadian Charity) Allan & Blaize Reich at Vancouver “Show ‘n Shine”
At Port Orford, OREGON – a few days after “uncle jack” had turned left at the Pacific!
Hide-And-Seek in the Giant Redwoods
Crossing the FINISH LINE in San Luis Obispo on 29th September 2009. After 69 days in the driving seat and 15,466 miles under the wheels, it’s another WORLD FIRST for Triumph!
“uncle jack” was the first car to undertake and complete the longest Drive for Charity in North American motoring history – despite the fact that so many said “it couldn’t be done!”
… inspite of the distance “uncle jack” still won the Stag Concours Prize at the combined TRIUMPHEST / VTR North American Challenge event with a score of 382 points out of 400. Pictured below (L to R) GLENN MERRELL – North American Event Co-ordinator, JOE PAWLAK - Master Technician & i/c Restoration, JOHN MACARTNEY – Driver.
Finally, here is an image of the book that commemmorates this epic trip. The book is still being written (as of 5th Jan 2010) but you can reserve your copy by sending an email to John Macartney - the author.
Finally, this website is NOT merely a record of a long-distance drive. More importantly, it’s a record of the most incredible restoration of a thirty-five year old car by a truly dedicated team of enthusiasts whose sole objective was to ensure the job was properly done and in such a way that the vehicle would not fail.
Those people at ILLINOIS SPORTS OWNERS ASSOCIATION under the leadership of Joe Pawlak all deserve a medal for endurance, perseverance and a refusal to be beaten. The successful drive across Canada and the United States is entirely and only as a result of their dedication. We urge you to click on the ARCHIVES section of this website (RH sidebar) from March 2008 to June 2009, where you will see plenty of reports and pix of the tear-down and rebuild of “uncle jack.” This is the area that is entirely unmolested in terms of pix removal and is an area that shouldn’t be missed.
A trip to the Archives should be of particular importance if you are a potential buyer and have not already seen the car yourself.
