The “Creature Comforts” in ‘uncle jack’
By John | July 18, 2009
A few days ago, I received an email from someone called Lance and it seemed Lance wasn’t too happy about me doing this Drive in a Stag.
While I don’t recall his exact wording, Lance gave me the impression that IÂ should have done the trip in a TR6 – on the grounds of comfort, if nothing else. Sorry, Lance – a Stag is FAR more comfortable than a TR of any type – especially when you’ve three months of driving ahead of you, a mass of luggage to lug around, a briefcase and other stuff – like a (slightly) protruding gut. Also, seemed Lance wanted evidence of the comfort area, so I’ve taken a pic of “uncle jack’s” ergonomic cockpit – and it’s below. Further down, you’ll also find a description of certain important features that help me pass the day at the wheel.
So, eyes down for guided tour:
INSTRUMENT PANEL: Conventional Stag – except for a Sunpro oil pressure gauge that’s out of sight by the driver’s left shin.
CRASH PAD: Cellphone holder, GPS/TomTom. video camera bracket that is a bastardised additional cellphone bracket. Now works much better than it did before Dave Hutchison modified it to feature a screwed timber support, velcro positioning and being painted black.
CENTRE CONSOLE
(Top) fresh air inlet that still blows air even when the fan is switched off! Hmmmm.
(Bottom) Radio / CD / MP3 player / with additional Bluetooth capability. Still don’t understand the instruction book!
Knobs are also conventional Stag except for the choke, which now features STANPART 00001 Service Tool for keeping the choke out. If you’ve never seen one, it’s a clothes peg and a piece of string. Works perfick – and ought to be seen on all British cars (even restored ones)Â – but rarely is!
The small white plastic clips were acquired at Radio Shack to help tidy up the GPS cable that’s fed from the cigar lighter socket. The clips were cheap and very soon proved to be utterly useless – so I’ve invested in a roll of black ‘insulting tape’ and hope to do a better and neater job in the near future.
