The loneliness of the Long Distance Runner!

    By John | September 4, 2009

We breasted a hilltop today and I peered through the flysquash at the road - winding its way, gently left and right. Just another bit of the same thing to which I’d become accustomed since leaving Winnipeg.

Vast tracts of land on either side and as far as the eye can see – with zillions òf extra square miles beyond the horizon.

    But what was that?

Yes, that strange shape – no, hang on a minute, those strange shapes in the far distance?

    Ye gods, it can’t be!

    It is.

Hey Jack, old friend, we’re looking at The Rockies. We’ve done it, mate! We’re coming off the prairie! Those are The Rockies and beyond them is the Pacific. YeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeHaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!

But what a memorable and fantastic drive its been. Left Winnipeg around 9.0am on Wednesday and met up with Scott McGibney and Ed Driver of the Saskatchewan British Car Club at the Province Welcome Centre. We journeyed on and spent a convivial but low-key evening with some members of JagNuts of Regina.

The next morning, it was breakfast with a small group, then ”wash úncle jack’ time and finally, the main reason for my visit to Regina – to see the house “my Dad lived in as a child and teenager on Retallack Street from 1906 until early 1915. To my delight, the house is still there, though it’s undergone a major re-fit and reshape in the last few weeks/months and now looks different to what it did over 100 years ago. Not surprising really.

It was time to return to the broad highway and we drove for some two or more hours, stopping for lunch at Swift Current. On again, but stopped early-ish in Maple Creek where we overnighted. Up into the Cypress Hills for an early dinner at an impressive camping and hotel complex – where I saw my first live Moose just after we left.

    They’re certainly big blighters!

On again this morning after my handover from Saskatchewan Club to Henri and Nicole Lefevre of VSCCC, Alberta - but at fairly high speed, as I needed to collect a parcel from Canadian Customs in Calgary. Got that done and now overnighting with Wendy and Fred Griffiths of Vintage Sports Car Club of Calgary. They kindly arranged an informal get-together of members at their home this afternoon and that was most enjoyable.

Tomorrow is RED LETTER DAY as Mrs. M. arrives at Calgary Airport from New York and I’m fairly certain we’ll spend the day together doing absolutely nothing – apart from catching up on lots of news from home, and just being together on our own for a while.

But what a drive the last few days have been …………………..
