“uncle jack” has turned LEFT at the Pacific!
By John | September 22, 2009
Departure from Vancouver WA yesterday was slightly delayed but we were underway by 10.30am. Circumnavigating Portland proved to be a bit manic but eventually the GPS got us on the road we needed. Actually, TomTom was never at fault. It was me who missed the turn we needed and we had to go on a gurt big loop to get back on track.
Picked up Highway 26 and headed west south west through the Tillamook State Park, marvelling at the trees and the few that are just beginning to display their autumn (Fall) colours. Reached Tillamook town by early afternoon, missed another turn and so also missed the start of the Coastal Road. But nifty navigation overcame that problem and our first sight of the Pacific Ocean was at Cape Kiwanda. This necessitated a celebratory stop to recognise “uncle jack’s” supreme achievement in getting me (and more latterly, Liz) all the way from the Atlantic at Daytona Beach, then the Gulf of Mexico at Fort Walton Beach – and finally more of the Atlantic when we said goodbye to it at Boston, MA – whenever that was
More particularly, apart from toasting “uj” and what he’s done since 27th June 2009, I raised a glass of micro-brewery ‘best’ to Stagmeister Joe Pawlak and his Team of Busted Knucklers at Illinois Sports Owners Association for completing a truly incredible restoration of an utterly delightful car that has attracted SO much attention and interest since we got underway all those weeks ago.
We continued south on Highway 101 as it rose and fell, noting the periodic wisps of sea fog rolling inland and marvelling at those huge Pacific rollers as they surged and crashed on to the sand below us.
At Cape Perpetua it was time for a photo from a vantage point …
… and then continuing until we reached Florence where we stopped for the night.
Sadly, much-needed sleep was denied us as Liz awoke in the middle of the night with food poisoning – and was most unwell. As a result, she’s still too unwell to travel today (Tuesday) and we hope to get underway again tomorrow (Wednesday). The downside – apart from Liz still feeling and looking far from her normal self – is we have to make up two days driving in one day and it also means that to keep to schedule, the brief vacation we’d planned for ourselves is probably going to be history. I’m still intending to be where I need to be for a meeting with a Lions Club near San Francisco on Thursday, so “uncle jack” is going to have to get his wheels turning when we finally set off. It might even mean saying farewell to the coast and returning to the Interstate which I’m reluctant to do for obvious reasons. I doubt we’ll get this opportunity again to see such magnificent scenery again so we must do our best to make the most of it.
More tomorrow when we’ve reached wherever we’re going to lay our weary heads.
